Emirates ID Guide: Application, Renewal & Replacement
Last updated: 28 July 2026 · Written by the Dar Al Riyadah document processing team, Sajaa Industrial Area, Sharjah
The Emirates ID is the single most important document for anyone living in the UAE -- it is required to open a bank account, sign a tenancy contract, register a SIM card, and access most government services. Because we process new applications, renewals, and replacements every week, this guide covers exactly what to expect at each stage, based on the cases we actually see at our office in Sajaa Industrial Area.
New Emirates ID Application
A new Emirates ID is issued alongside a new residence visa. The process starts once your entry permit or employment visa is approved, and typically follows this order:
- Typing and submission of the ID application through the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security) system.
- Biometric appointment -- fingerprints, photo, and signature are captured at an authorized typing center or ICP service center.
- Card printing and delivery -- once biometrics are approved, the physical card is printed and can be collected or delivered.
Emirates ID Renewal
Emirates ID renewal follows the same validity period as your residence visa, so the two are almost always processed together. We recommend starting the renewal 30 days before expiry to leave room for a biometric re-appointment if your existing photo or fingerprint record needs updating.
Lost or Damaged ID Replacement
If your Emirates ID is lost, stolen, or damaged, you'll need to report it and apply for a replacement card rather than waiting until the renewal date. The replacement process requires:
- A police report, if the card was stolen (not required for a simply lost or damaged card in most cases)
- Your passport and current visa page
- A new biometric appointment if your old fingerprint or photo record is unusable
Until the replacement is issued, keep a copy of your passport and visa page handy, since many services (banks, government counters) will ask for identification.
Personal Information Updates
If your name, nationality, or other personal details change -- for example after a legal name correction, marriage, or passport renewal with updated information -- your Emirates ID needs to be updated to match. This is a more limited process than a full renewal but still requires supporting documents (updated passport, court order, or marriage certificate as applicable).
Typical Processing Timeline
| Stage | Typical Timeline |
|---|---|
| Application typing & submission | Same day |
| Biometric appointment scheduling | 1-3 days depending on availability |
| Card printing after biometrics approved | 3-5 working days |
| Delivery or collection | 1-2 additional days |
These timelines can extend during peak periods (school year start, post-holiday season) or if additional document verification is required, so we always give clients a realistic estimate rather than the best-case number.
Common Reasons for Delay
- Expired or soon-to-expire passport used as the identity reference document.
- Biometric mismatch -- old fingerprint records that no longer match cleanly, common after certain hand injuries or for elderly applicants, requiring a second capture attempt.
- Unpaid fines linked to your Emirates ID or visa file that need clearing before a renewal is approved.
- Incomplete sponsor documentation when the ID is tied to an employer or family sponsor whose own paperwork isn't current.
How Dar Al Riyadah Helps
We handle the typing, submission, and appointment scheduling for new applications, renewals, and replacements, and we track your application status until the card is ready for collection. Because we coordinate directly with ICP-authorized centers, we can usually tell you within minutes of reviewing your documents whether anything is likely to cause a delay -- before you've paid a government fee.
